Selecting the right web host that gives you scalability is important to avoid having to deal with the troubles of site migration down the road.

So, is Nexcess the right choice for your website?

In this review, I'll go over their pros, cons, and features to give you a better idea if this web host is the one for you.

Let’s begin!

Getting to Know Nexcess

Nexcess Review 2021 - Is This the Web Hosting for You Nexcess

Over the past 20 years, Nexcess, a subsidiary of LiquidWeb, has grown to host more than 500,000 sites. Their main focus is on providing web hosting solutions to growing websites worldwide.

They've won numerous awards for their reliable service, being included in the Inc. hall of fame among others.

Nexcess Review

For this review, we’ll look at:

  • The pros
  • The cons
  • Performance and uptime
  • Products and features
  • Website builders
  • Packages and pricing
  • Security
  • Customer service

Nexcess Pros

With Nexcess, you can expect:

  • Reliability

  • Free daily backups

  • Free site migration

  • One-click WordPress staging

Reliability

When it comes to reliability, Nexcess doesn't disappoint, providing near-perfect uptime of [cvg nexcessup].

It only went offline once between May 2020-2021. That’s how reliable it is.

This means your site will stay up and available to users most of the time. If you’re selling products, you won’t have to deal with any customer complaints and lost sales due to your site going offline.

This also means you won’t incur the wrath of the Google algorithm, which often ranks sites that experience greater downtime lower on its search results.

Free daily backups

Unlike other web hosting providers that charge you for weekly site backups, Nexcess offers daily backups completely free in all their plans. This saves your site’s content for 30 days, so it will still be available in the event that you encounter data loss.

Free site migration

If you’re looking to transfer your site to Nexcess’s servers, you won’t have to pay extra fees or get your hands dirty in the technicalities.

Nexcess’s experienced technicians manage the whole migration process for you, ensuring your site won’t encounter any bugs.

One-click WordPress staging

Has WordPress recently come out with a snazzy new update? You don’t want to try it out only to mess up your website’s content and features. That’s what one-click WordPress staging is for. It lets you try out new features or tools in a “staged” area so you don’t have to put your current site at risk of damages.

If you see that the new update works well for your site, then you can take the steps to add it to the real website.

Nexcess Cons

As with any other web hosting, there are downsides, too. Here are a few of Nexcess’:

  • Low storage on the basic plan (Spark)
  • Relatively expensive
  • No free domain
  • No cPanel

Low storage on the basic plan

Nexcess’s basic plan, Spark, offers only 15GB of storage, which isn’t enough if you’re looking to put out a decent amount of videos and pictures.

Considering its basic plan is for smaller sites, that may be understandable. However, other hosting providers such as Bluehost provide over 50GB of storage space on their basic plan.

Relatively expensive

The Spark plan starts at $9.50 per month, which is pretty expensive considering the competition. Again Bluehost provides their basic plan for just $2.99.

Nexcess justifies this with the number of extra features and support they provide. Though if you think about it, a few lower-priced options would have made their services more accessible to bloggers and individuals.

Anyway, if you pay annually, you’ll get 4 free months of hosting, making the price a bit more bearable.

No free domain

While other web hosting providers often provide a free domain name for the first year, you won’t get one with Nexcess, even if their plan pricing is above average.

This means you’ll have to buy it separately, and that will cost you above $15 per year, depending on the name you select.

No cPanel

cPanel is one of the most popular control panels in the industry, along with Plesk. That being said, many users have grown accustomed to the build and navigation of this control panel. Moving to a different control panel, like the Nexcess Client Portal can present a bit of a learning curve for users. Furthermore, it puts beginners at higher risk of errors that could cost them important data or even their entire website.

Nexcess: Performance and Uptime

While their uptime is excellent, boasting [cvg nexcessup], the speed you get with Nexcess averages around [cvg nexcessspeed].

While that isn’t bad in any respect, there are faster web hosts such as A2 Hosting. This hosting provides cheaper or similarly priced packages with exceptional speeds of [cvg a2hostingspeed].

However, you do get multiple server location options, with data centers located in multiple countries like the US, Europe, Taiwan, and Australia.

Nexcess: Products and Features

With Nexcess’s Spark plan, you’ll get 2TB of bandwidth, 15GB of SSD storage space, and support for one site, including unlimited email support across all their packages.

Considering the price, the amount of space you’re getting isn’t much, but since their shared hosting packages are Managed WordPress solutions, the overall experience will be a lot simpler.

While the Spark plan may only be suitable for a small local business, you’ll be able to choose between 7 other plans available in the Managed WordPress Hosting.

Your choices are very flexible, which can go up to a whopping 800GB of storage space with the Enterprise plan.

Speaking of hosting types, you’ll also get plenty of package options from Managed Woocommerce and Magento to Dedicated server and Cloud-based options.

And with every plan you select, you’ll get a 30-day window to apply for a refund. This gives you plenty of time to try out their services (though there isn’t any refund policy if you pay monthly).

Nexcess: Website Builders

Nexcess includes a whole host of features in every plan to give you a user-friendly way to go about building your site.

With Managed WordPress, you’ll get access to a variety of different industry-specific themes, through iThemes, to help you create the perfect website tailored to your specific aesthetic requirements.

You’ll also have access to Qubely, a popular site-building tool that makes designing and editing your templates and content intuitive and beginner-friendly.

What’s more, they have a staging space that gives you the ability to test your design on a clone site first, before you decide to take it live. So you don’t have to worry about launching a faulty design.

Nexcess: Packages and Pricing

Plan type

Pricing range per month*

Managed WordPress Hosting

$9.50-$499.50

Managed WooCommerce Hosting

$9.50-$499.50

Managed Magento Hosting

$49.00-$849.00

Cloud Hosting

With Managed WordPress and WooCommerce, the price on the table above will only be applicable if you opt for the yearly plan. If you choose to pay monthly, you’ll have to pay around 50-70% more on each plan.

When it comes to scalability, Nexcess doesn’t disappoint with a wide variety of different hosting plans and different options to choose from. Plus, you can guarantee that each one will meet your expectations no matter how unique your needs are.

Nexcess: Security

Nexcess provides a bunch of different features when it comes to security. These features are all there to keep your site and its users safe at all times.

SSL certificates in each plan safeguard your customers’ personal information, such as credit card details. This will ensure that hackers won’t have access to sensitive data, even if they somehow manage to gain access to your site.

DDoS protection comes standard as well, with Nexcess’s firewall protecting your site from bots that hackers use to take down your site.

Automatic WP and software updates through iThemes security ensure your plugins are kept up to date. In turn, this prevents hackers from exploiting old loopholes and gaining access to your site.

What’s more, automatic daily backups ensure that your information is recoverable in the event of data loss. And, unlike weekly backups, you’ll always have the most recent data available.

Nexcess: Customer Service

24/7 customer support comes standard with all Nexcess’s plans. Their experienced professionals are available through phone, email, or live chat.

With a response usually coming in within 5 minutes, their representatives are always ready to answer your queries or solve your problem, no matter how simple or complex it may be.

You’ll also get access to their knowledge hub which contains a wealth of different how-to guides and answered FAQs. This allows you to solve issues by yourself without having to contact support.

Wrapping It Up

All in all, Nexcess is an exceptional web hosting provider for eCommerce sites looking for scalable solutions - their managed support will handle all the technicalities for them.

And while it may not have the fastest loading, with Nexcess, you’re spoiled for choice with the many plans and features.

So while we wouldn’t recommend Nexcess for the small-scale blogger or individual, we do recommend it for eCommerce sites, small or large.

If that your site, Nexcess is a hosting provider you wouldn’t want to ignore.
